Weekend immediately following check-in.

TERP QUEST Eppley Recreation Center
Free event, but reservations required.
While you attend the Welcome Extravaganza, your kids can
enjoy Terp Quest! Designed
especially for the "little" Terps ages 6 - 12, this program will
provide opportunities to play cooperative games, create
art projects and have fun in the company of a small
group of other Terp Quest participants at the Eppley
Recreation Center. Your children will be encouraged by our
caring counselors to fully participate in age-appropriate
activities. Light morning snacks and refreshments will be
provided, and all participants will receive a special Family
Weekend Terp Quest t-shirt. Terp Quest is a "kids only" program and is open to all children in Grades 1 through
6. Activities were developed and are supervised by
certified recreation professionals. Parents should
drop-off children at the Eppley Recreation Center by
9:00 a.m., then pick-up
children immediately following the Welcome Extravaganza
at 12:00 p.m.

10:30 a.m. Welcome Celebration Enjoy a delicious breakfast spread and
conversation while you mingle with other parents and
interact with President and Mrs. Mote and various
university administrators in the beautiful setting of
Moxley Gardens. All registered Family Weekend
participants are invited to attend, and families are
welcome to arrive at any time during the Meet & Greet.
Then, gather in Orem Alumni Hall for the official
kick-off celebration for Family Weekend! Listen to
welcome remarks and enjoy a spirited performance by our
surprise guests from the Department of Music. Recipients
of the 2008 Outstanding Academic Advisor Award,
Outstanding Faculty Educator Award and the Family Member
of the Year Award will be also recognized. Families
attending the celebration will be eligible to win one of
several great door prizes, including a MacBook and Dell
Latitude laptop computer.

THE UM-AZING RACE
McKeldin Mall
Using only a compass and a map to guide you, explore
the campus and find specified landmarks within the
allotted time. Teams of families can check in any
time from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at the UM-azing Race
table on McKeldin Mall and will finish at the Eppley
Recreation Center Adventure Complex.
Participants will have a chance to win various
prizes.
OFF CAMPUS EXCURSIONS
All excursions will take place rain or shine. Advance
registration required.
Buses will depart campus from the front of the Main
Administration Building.
Where the "Wild" Things Are National Zoo, Washington, D.C.
Departs campus at 2:00 p.m. and departs from
the National Zoo at 6:00 p.m. $8 per

Join Dr. Jo Gayle Howard, adjunct professor in the
Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, for a special
lecture on the Giant Pandas then explore the zoo on your own. Jo Gayle, a veterinarian and reproductive
physiologist in the Department of Reproductive
Science at the National Zoo for the last 17 years,
was instrumental in the artificial insemination of
the Giant Pandas and is internationally known for
her work with the use of advanced reproductive
biology techniques in conservation of endangered
species, particularly large cats and pandas.
Founded in 1889 and created by an act of Congress, the
Smithsonian National Zoological Park is home to thousands of
animals from all over the world.
Bike the
Sites! National Monuments Tour National
Mall, Washington, D.C. Departs campus at
2:00 p.m. and departs from Penn
Quarter at approximately 6:00 p.m.
$38 for
adults/UM students (includes round trip transportation and
tour fees)
$28 for children 12 and under (includes round trip
transportation and tour fees) Hop on a bike and explore the monuments and
memorials around the National Mall and Potomac Tidal
Basin. Visit and learn about many famous sites,
including the Washington Monument and WW II
Memorial, as well as a few hidden treasures. Stephen
Marks, UM alumnus and
Bike the Sites tour guide, will share history and
interesting anecdotes about each memorial, then
allow a few minutes for you to explore the sites on
your own.
Bike tour level of difficulty is "Easy" and is for people of
all ages.
Competent children 4' 6" or
taller ride their own bikes; toddlers and small
children ride along behind a parent or guardian in
trailer carriers and on tandem trailers (child
trailers that attach to an adult bike
). A parent or guardian must accompany children
under 16.

University of Maryland staff will conduct a visit to the
Banneker-Douglass Museum on Church Circle and its
exhibit of hundreds of artifacts excavated from City of
Annapolis sites by University of Maryland archaeology
faculty and students, and a walking tour of nearby homes and
inns dating to the 1700s. Touring will conclude by 4:00
p.m., leaving two hours for families to enjoy Maryland’s
capital city at their own pace.
All sites are within easy walking distance of the U.S.
Naval Academy grounds and Maryland State House (both open to
the public), museums, restaurants, shopping, and commanding
views of Spa Creek. Bring your cameras and photo ID, and
wear comfortable shoes!

QUIZZES Experience a class without all the work! University faculty and
administrators will share their expertise during these special
sessions designed specifically for Family Weekend. Family Weekend

MySpace) are staples in the lives of students, enabling them to
share their lives via blogs and photos with literally thousands of
people. While these electronic connections provide a useful outlet,
many fail to realize the pitfalls of such web sites—especially when
they can be accessed by university administrators, professors and
prospective employers. Join our panel of experts as they discuss the
“Facebook phenomenon,” cybersafety, cyberethics, and ways to help
students become more responsible in their on-line activities.

2:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. DISCOVER THE TERP ZONE! Stamp Student Union Free bowling and billiard tables with Family Weekend
nametag. All kids and
kids-at-heart are invited to experience the fun of the Terp Zone
game facility, complete with 8 bowling lanes, several billiard
tables, popular arcade games and a TV lounge. You supply the
energy and we’ll provide the coupons for free bowling and
billiard tables. The popular Cosmic Bowling event begins at 9
p.m. Family members are also invited to take in the weekend
movie at the Hoff Theatre, located just down the hall from the
Terp Zone.
