America in the Middle East: The Consequences of
Power and the Choice for Peace
Benjamin Banneker Room, Stamp Student Union
One of America's most sought-after commentators,
Shibley Telhami will discuss the historical context
and the contemporary impact of the Arab-Israeli
conflict on the Middle East, and the continuing role
of the United States in the region. Telhami is the
university's Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and
Development and is recognized locally, nationally
and internationally for his expertise on U.S.
diplomacy and Middle Eastern affairs. A frequent
contributor to the nation's television, radio and
print media, he is currently a member of the Council
on Foreign Relations and the Board of Directors of
Human Rights Watch. His bestselling book, The
Stakes: America in the Middle East, was selected
by Foreign Affairs as one of the top five
books on the Middle East.
Meerkat Manor, Unplugged

Join Emmy award-winning professor, Dr. Michael
Olmert, for this engaging insider’s perspective on
the writing and making of his latest film,
Meerkat Manor: The Story Begins. Narrated by
Whoopi Goldberg,
the film follows the real-life adventures of the
Whiskers family and tells the story of Flower before
she became the Manor’s famous matriarch on Animal
Planet’s Emmy-nominated series Meerkat Manor.
Michael Olmert holds a Ph.D. in medieval English
literature from Maryland. He is a frequent
contributor to
Colonial Williamsburg Magazine and has
often appeared in
Smithsonian Magazine
and the
Washington Post.
He is also a prodigious screenwriter who has won
numerous awards, including three Emmys for his work.
Olmert has been engaging students at Maryland for 22
years and was inducted into the Maryland Alumni Hall
of Fame in 2005.
First Year Book Program
Pyon Su Room, Stamp Student Union
University faculty will lead a discussion of this
year’s book, War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning
by Chris Hedges. Join this lively conversation
and examine the meaning of war, how wars begin and
the impact of war on the national psyche.
Registration is required for this class,
and all families who register for this session will
receive a complimentary copy of the book to read
prior to Family Weekend.
Note: The Office of Undergraduate Studies will
present all new students with a copy of the book. First
Year
students will receive their copy of the book at the
Terp Market on Sunday, August 31 in the Grand
Ballroom, Stamp Student Union. After this date,
students can obtain a copy at the front desk in 2130 Mitchell Building.

Dick Berg, professor of physics, develops and maintains
more than 1,500 demonstrations used in physics classes
on campus and in clever and amusing outreach programs
that have been offered to school and community audiences
over the past 22 years. He will conduct The Physics
IQ Test—the audience will vote on the correct
answers to brainteaser questions, then see each question
answered using a physics demonstration.
Dinner

Two of the most dynamic young women of jazz come
together for an intimate, soulful evening that will
sweep you into their groove. Parlato, winner of the
2004 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals
Competition, soothes and mellows a room with her
fresh, breezy phrasing and lilting Brazilian
rhythms, having a hypnotic effect on your senses.
Bassist, singer and composer Spalding brings the
rhythms of jazz and pop fusion to vibrant life. This
young artist, born in 1984, has chops that have led
her onstage alongside such notable artists as Regina
Carter, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano and Patti Austin.
It’s the stuff of jazz legends in the making.
